Pre-Purchase Survey
This is the most comprehensive type of inspection, and is strongly advised when purchasing a new or used vessel. Condition and overall operation of the vessel should be examined. This covers structural integrity, electrical systems, the propulsion system, the fuel system, other machinery, navigation equipment, miscellaneous on-board systems, cosmetic appearance, electronics, and overall maintenance as well as an out-of-water inspection. This inspection is performed so that the insurance company can determine whether or not the vessel is an acceptable risk. They are interested in structural integrity and safety for its intended use as well as the condition of the items listed in “pre-purchase survey” to properly determine the replacement value of the vessel in case of a loss. Most insurance companies require a survey on boats they insure.Oil Analysis
As a part of the pre-purchase or insurance survey, the exterior inspection of the engine will be conducted. It’s a mostly visual inspection and only tell a small part of the story. Sea trial and wide-open-throttle testing (if possible) may only reveal certain data like engine RPMs, temperatures, vibrations, smoke and leaks. Therefore, we strongly recommend to include at least the oil analysis test to your survey. An oil sample analysis (OSA) evaluates the levels and types of metals and the presence of such contaminants as abrasives, soot, water, fuel, and engine coolant in the oil of gas and diesel engines. A lab report will flag any suspected anomalies, state possible causes, and offer some plain-English recommendations. Typical conditions that can be found by analysis include abnormal wear of metals, fuel dilution, dirt or water contamination, coolant contamination, and incorrect lubricant. Discovering any out-of-range condition early can prevent expensive repairs later on. Test can be performed on engines, transmissions and generators.Engine Survey
Full pre-purchase engine survey is the best way to know! Besides the services listed in above surveys and tests you will receive if purchased, the full comprehensive picture or your engine. Including, but not limited to: Engine motor mounts condition. Shaft to engine coupling. Hoses and hose clamps. Electrical connections at the engine and battery, charging systems. Gaskets and seals. Heat spots or leaks at the seals that may signal an overheating problem. Hose-to-fitting seals. Fuel lines, lift pumps, injectors and all filter assemblies. Each and every belt inspection. Impeller inspection. Turbos and manifolds, cylinder head gaskets and exhaust leaks. Compression test, digital or conventional. All sensor and computer performance. Complete computer diagnostics along with verification of engine hours, current and historical active and inactive trouble codes.
Sea Trials are not always possible since the open waters can be hours away, but can be added as a part of your inspection if desired for additional cost.
